HBC Missions Conference: Three Questions for Scott Phillips

The HBC Missions Focus has adopted the theme “7 Billion Reasons” for the last two years. At times, it is easy to get lost in the immensity of the number, until you are stopped in your tracks with a story of one people group and one family’s passion to reach the unreached, because He said “GO!”

Mark your calendars for a special kickoff event called “YO” on Friday, February 26th at 6:30pm at the historic Sorosis building on Lake Morton. In the Dao language, “yo” means a gathering of people. HBC’s version of “YO” is an evangelistic event at a unique venue for the purposes of communicating the message of the gospel to the unreached of Lakeland. Our guest speaker at “YO” is Scott Phillips, a missionary to the Dao Tribe in Indonesia. Scott is married to Jennie and they have four young boys.

In 2003, Scott and Jennie journeyed deep into the jungles of Indonesia to make their first contact with the Dao tribe. The “YO” event will detail their amazing journey of these last eight years living and ministering among the Dao. The Phillips have specifically labored in evangelism, discipleship and the translation of the New Testament into the Dao language.

In anticipation of Missions Conference, here’s a quick Q & A with Scott Phillips. Make plans to be at the Sorosis Building on February 26th, bring a friend who needs to hear the gospel, and pray that God would move in all hearts in a mighty way!

  1. When did you and Jennie initially develop a burden for unreached people groups?

The Lord showed us the need for going to the remote people groups that had never yet had their first opportunity to hear about Jesus while we were in college. He used Romans 15:20-22 to convict us that He has a very specific agenda to see those with no access to the gospel have a chance to hear.

  2. What most excites you about the work with the Dao people thus far?

There is nothing like seeing God work firsthand and bring people that are hearing His story for the first time brought to an understanding of the work of Jesus. Salvation truly is a miracle that only God can perform. He draws people to Himself and gives them the understanding they need and so He deserves all the Glory!

  3. What is your prayer/burden for churches in America as it relates to unreached people groups?

I pray that people would realize that all of us already have a “CALL” to be a part of missions as laid out in the Bible in Matthew 28:18-20. There are only three choices for every individual in the American church when it comes to missions: GO, SEND, or BE DISOBEDIENT

Watch this brief promo about Scott's journey, and invite friends and neighbors to come see the documentary short on February 26 at the Sorosis building.
